Mood: cheerful, Music: Gettin' Jiggy Wit it - Will Smith
So as promised... the Happy Meal story... I'm gonna drag it out a little bit so it makes you feel like you waited for something...

Way back, almost a million years ago.  It was Sophmore Year in High School.... It was the Late 80's... 1987-1988 school year, i believe.   All school year long our Band leader (yes, I was a music geek in high school) had worked on getting everyone excited about the upcoming band trip.  The year before, he took us to our nation's capitol, and it sucked... cause I didn't go... but I heard that it wasn't a great time... only a good time... but I digress, so Mr. Hankey (thats what I call him now, cause during my Senior year, he turned into a giant stinky, steaming pile of poo), has been promising great things out of our next band trip.  We were going to Montreal, Quebec, Canada!!  WOOHOOO !!! All we had to do to get the price down of our trip was to sell some fruit... a couple of cases should do it... well needless to say, even in the thriving 1980's no one wanted a whole case of citris at $40+ a case, sight unseen, but me being the expert salesmen I am, I managed to sell 5 cases.  Granted, 2 cases were to my parents, but still it was 5 cases.  That should take the cost down quite a bit.  Then of course there was that whole delivering the fruit process... the 3 people didn't want to come pick up the fruit.  I wasn't going to carry it, I couldn't drive and these things were HEAVY!!!  so they sat in the kitchen... and sat and sat and then I found out what a fruit fly was.  So, needless to say, My parents and I effectively bought 5 cases of citris.  $220 worth of fruit, and only $80 of it was edible.   Glad I had a part time job as a paper boy.

Skipping ahead a few months...

Its finally time for the trip.  Most of my friends are going.  Ed (real name) finds out he couldn't go about 2 weeks ahead of time, even though he did all the fund raising and such.  His mom and him had a fight and she said he couldn't go and wouldn't sign the permission slip.  Well little did anyof us know, she signed it and he could have gone... but thats skipping ahead... So as far as he knew he wasn't going.  So the morning of, we had to arrivie at school at 5AM.  No idea why, not like we didn't leave late anyway, but we were there at 5.  The Buses were there at 5:15am.  we loaded the buses with instruments and luggage starting at 6.  all 3 buses were loaded and ready for passengers at 7 am.  We all made last minute bathroom trips that lasted until 7:15.  We were supposed to leave at 7:20.   We were all packed into the buses for our 8+hour trip to Montreal, Quebec, Canada... So, finally, the buses start pulling forward at 7:45.  As we start down the main drag out of town, we see Ed walking to school and we all Wave, hoot, holler, scream, yell, etc, etc, etc at Ed and he just waves back.  Someone mentions "too bad Ed couldn't come with us".  Thats when our Band Director states "Ed is the reason why we left late.  He's supposed to be here.  His mom signed all the forms and everything.  We were waiting for him to show up."  Had this been communicated, I'm sure that at least 8 or 9 people would have called him and woke him up at 5 am to get him out of bed... but lets get back to the story at hand...

Had a pretty uneventful trip up to Montreal.  Sleeping, eating, singing, dancing inthe aisles, etc etc etc... 10 hours later... we're at the hotel... checking in and stuff.  I get my room, and instead of 4 people in the room , its just 2 of us.  I didn't say anything, neither did he... party time...

ok... I think I've bored you with enough details...

We performed a couple of different places in Montreal.  One of the places we went was a mall.  Well after the performance, we were allowed to shop and have lunch and whatever for about a 2 hour window.  I thought I brought all my money with me, but I didn't.  All I had was $20... Canadian.  Not nowing this, I went and bought an album... yes, a vinyl album... which one is not important.  if you ask nicely, I might tell you... So when I go to grab some money for lunch, I have $1 Canadian in my hand with a couple fo pennies, a Quarter and dime (American).  So basically, I started asking my fellow classmates, ok begging, for a hand out.  I even started using the line... "By me a Happy Meal, and I'll make you happy!"  It eventually worked.... Just needed to ask the right person...

so uh....how did you make him/her happy? lol. Wow, I'm so glad I'm not the only band dork around here! Your story sounds just like all our trips and boy did I bust tail to sell fruit and these pizza kits that came along later on, lol. I walked door to door all four years in three neighborhoods, it always paid for my trips so I didn't mind. But yeah.....you will NEVER leave on time when there are 200-300 people convoying on buses! The stops for food along the way were always interesting too, lol. We need to swap stories! thank you for the Happy Meal story :)
