CD's of the moment.....

The Specials - "The Singles Collection" - Something old, something new. Something borrowed, something blue-beat.

Elvis Presley - "Tiger Man" -- '68 comeback. Sit down show. Nervous, edgy, surging. Presley finds his feet again and staves off irrelevancy. Scotty Moore says about four words....which only adds to his genius.

Chris Kenner - "Land Of A Thousand Dances" - The original found here. Church gone bayou.

Otis Redding - "Live In London & Paris" - With all due respect to both James Brown and the Stones, the greatest show on earth. Otis, Booker T. & The MG's, Memphis Horns. Nuff said.

Dinner of the moment - Mike's Hot Dogs. Killer sauce and an atmosphere that hasn't changed since I was a child. Stop in and you'll see everyone from bums to businessmen.

TV of the moment -- "Boogie Man: Lee Atwater" on PBS.

DVD of the moment - "Wonderfalls"

Book of the moment -- "Pretty Vacant: A History Of UK Punk" by Phil Strongman.

Dessert of the moment - Nonni's Toffee Almond Biscotti.

Have you ever had one of those conversations where you are so far apart on the subject you are talking about that it leaves you speechless?  I seem to be having an alarming amount of those lately.

Caddied a nine mile race for my brother this past weekend and was passed twice by running great Bill Rodgers. Cool. Seeing famous people in person is always a tad surreal. Fortunately, he was quite pleasant.

Ah, another great rock and roll moment....The Sex Pistols infamous interview with Bill Grundy on the "Today" Show, UK, '76.

The clip can be found on YouTube...the last time I checked.....

Bill Grundy (Host): Safety pins? Chains around the neck? And that's just it fellas, yeah yeah. Eh...?  I mean, it is just the fellas -- yeah.

Glen Matlock (Pistols bassist) : (reading Grundy's cue cards) 'They are punk rockers, the new craze, they tell me.'

Grundy: They are punk rockers, the new craze, they tell me. Their heroes, not the nice clean Rolling Stones - you see, they are as drunk as I am. They are clean by comparison. They are a group called the Sex Pistols - and I am surrounded now by all of them! So just let us see the Sex Pistols in action!  Come on, chucks...

The beginning of a video for "Anarchy In The UK" is shown....

Grundy: I'm told that that group have received 40,000 from a record company. Doesn't that seem slightly opposed to their anti-materialistic way of life?

Matlock: No, the more the merrier.

Grundy: Really?

Matlock: Oh yeah.

Grundy: Well, tell me more then -

Steve Jones (Pistols guitarist) : We've fucking spent it, ain't we?

Grundy: I don't know, have you?

Matlock: Yep, it's all gone, down the boozer -

Grundy: Really? Good Lord -

Matlock: Golly gosh -

Grundy: Now I want to know one thing.....

Matlock: What?

Grundy: Are you serious or are you just making things up?

Matlock: No, it's -

Grundy: Really?

Matlock: Yeah -

Grundy: But I mean about what you're doing?

Matlock: Oh yeah.

Grundy: You are serious?

Matlock: Mmm.

Grundy: Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and Brahms have all died -

Johnny Rotten (Pistols vocalist) - Oh God, they're heroes of ours, ain't they?

Grundy: Really? What? What are you saying, sir?

Rotten: They're such wonderful people -

Grundy: Are they?

Rotten: Oh yes! They really turn us on.

Grundy: Well suppose they turn other people on -

Rotten: That's just their tough shit.

Grundy: It's what?

Rotten: Nothing, a rude word -- next question.

Grundy: No, no. What was the rude word?

Rotten: Shit.

Grundy: Was it really? Good God, you frighten me to death.

Rotten: Oh all right, Siegfried -

Grundy: What about you girls behind?

Matlock: He's like yer dad, inni? This geezer -

Grundy: Are you worried or just enjoying yourself?

Matlock: Or yer granddad -

Siouxsie Sioux ( eventual Banshees vocalist, standing behind the Pistols): Enjoying myself.

Grundy: Are you?

Sioux: Yeah.

Grundy: That's what I thought you were doing.

Sioux: I always wanted to meet you.

Grundy: Did you really?

Sioux: Yeah.

Grundy: We'll meet afterwards then, shall we?

Steve Jones (Pistols guitarist): You dirty sod! You dirty old man!

Grundy: Well, keep going, chief, keep going. Go on, you've got another five seconds, say something outrageous -

Jones: You dirty bastard!

Grundy: Go on, again.

Jones: You dirty fucker!

Grundy: What a clever boy!

Jones: What a fucking rotter!

Grundy: Well, that's it for tonight. The other rocker Eammon -

Matlock: Eammon!

Grundy: I'm saying nothing else about him, will be back tomorrow. I'll be seeing you soon -- (to the Pistols) I hope I'm not be seeing you again. From me though, goodnight!

CD's of the moment.....

The Pretenders - "The Pretenders"

Fabulous Thunderbirds - "The Essential Collection"

Charlie Chesterman - "Dynamite Music Machine"

Black Flag - "Damaged"

A musically related side note, I've always been somewhat disheartened by those who dismiss Jimmie Vaughan as somehow inferior in talent to brother Stevie Ray. Don't get me wrong, I dig Stevie Ray. I was fortunate to see him live (several times) and I have the records. Though they both had similar influences, don't confuse their style with their substance. Stevie tended to be more rock (mixing Hendrix with Albert King) and flash, where Jimmie tended to be more spartan (mixing Slim Harpo with pick a King). In fact, it could be said that Jimmie did more with less. But both were marvelous players. They just approached their guitars in different ways.

Though the weather has evened out here, I enjoy running in cold, rainy weather. Keeps you alert and adds an extra element of challenge. Maybe it is just the feeling of defying the elements. Or thinking that you are. Perhaps it's a vestige from childhood, when a simple joy was had in splashing through puddles.

TV of the moment - Carrie Rodriguez on "Austin City Limits."

Dessert of the moment - Walker's Shortbread Rounds.

DVD of the moment -- "SCTV Volume 1."

Dinner of the moment - Mixed Italian Sub.

Book of the moment -  "MOJO: Punk - The Whole Story"

Happy Halloween to all. Don't go making yourself sick on all that....candy. Yeah, candy.

Recent CD spins......

Memphis power pop weekend:

1.) Van Duren - "Are You Serious?"

2.) Tommy Hull - "Far From This Planet"

3.) Big Star - "#1 Record"/"Radio City"

4.) Crash Into June - "From Blind To Blue"

5.) Tommy Hoehn - "Of Moons & Fools..."

6.) The Scruffs - "Wanna Meet The Scruffs?"

7.) Chris Bell - "I Am The Cosmos"

Last one out?  Please turn off the lights at Fenway Park. Can't say I was too stunned with the Rays victory. Disheartening, nonetheless. It will be interesting to see what tweaking takes place over the off season.

Whilst daydreaming, I couldn't help being reminded how quickly those things you were feted for can be so quickly discarded.

Book of the moment - "The Children" by David Halberstam. I've recommended this book on here before. Why am I doing it again? John Lewis ( House Of Rep, Georgia) and his comments concerning McCain's campaign. Read the book and consider the thought of walking in Lewis' shoes. For the nay-sayers? I'll put it simply -- fuck off.

Snack of the moment - Snyder's Sourdough Pretzel Nibblers.

Dinner of the moment - Chili. Okay, I put a snack first. I'm an adult (allegedly) so I eat in any order I want. Nyah, nyah, nyah.

DVD of the moment - "Band Of Brothers"

TV of the moment - "Chocolate News" - I like David Alan Grier, but wasn't too thrilled with the first episode. I will give it another chance and see if it gets better.

Recent CD listenin'.....

Bobby Bare - " Sings Lullabys, Legends And Lies "- My dad loved this record. When I was a kid, I thought -- "how quaint." I was a dumb-ass. As I got a little older? I thought -- "it's brilliant." Taught me a lesson about both art and my father.

Hank Snow - "Country Legends" - Oft overlooked hero of country. A case could also be made that he was a rock 'n' roll pioneer. "The Golden Rocket" anyone?

R. E. M. - "Fables Of The Reconstruction" -- "Driver 8" is one of my all time favorite songs. Had the pleasure of singing it with a friend...many moons ago.  On a related side note, his use of the opening to "Talk About The Passion" to tune up has been indelibly etched in my brain.

The Clash - "Live At Shea Stadium" - Fuck the politics. The music was great. Like the Ramones, it is still hard to believe they're gone.

Headache inducing, marathon Sox loss. Josh Beckett is clearly ailing. Here is to hoping Lester comes through. Again.

Well, Pats haters must surely be smiling. Trashed by San Diego. I will say this -- hmm, perhaps Brady had a bit more to do with the winning than just the "system?"  No spy jokes, please.

Snack of the moment -- fresh pineapple.

Television of the moment -- "The Trial Of Saddam Hussein" on PBS.

Book of the moment -- "Moanin' At Midnight: The Life And Times Of Howlin' Wolf" -- Sam Phillips said it best, "where the soul of man never dies."

CD's of the moment - Albert King - "Born Under A Bad Sign."

Bangles - "All Over The Place."

The Who - "Who's Better, Who's Best."

Much ink (deservedly so) is being poured upon the passing of Paul Newman. There isn't much I could add that hasn't already been written elsewhere. His prodigious talent and gracious humanity will be sorely missed. Pick out a favorite work of his, throw it in the machine, and pay tribute to the man.

Gearing up for another Sox post season run. Things are a tad more cloudy than they've been in previous encounters. The Angels look stronger and finally have that missing bat. Will the absence of Manny come back to haunt?  Beckett is a post season God, but no Schilling this time through. Will the less than stellar pen be the downfall? We shall see.

I smell something burning. I do believe it is coming from both Flushing and the Bronx.

Concerning the end of Shea...come on. Hell, most Mets fans I know can't stand the dump.

TV of the moment -- "Bang The Drum Slowly."  The original teleplay that starred Paul Newman. Later made into a motion picture with Robert De Niro and Michael Moriarty.

DVD of the moment -- "Weeds - Season Three."

Dessert of the moment - Coconut cream pie.

As it has been stated here before, fall/end of the season races are some of my favorites. This past Sunday was no exception. The weather was perfect, the atmosphere genial and the results were excellent. One hundred well turned laps. Thankfully, all wrecks were avoided and our equipment held up. The one issue that did dog us was still being underpowered. Our set up hit the mark, but the discrepancy in horsepower between our car and the front runners was all too apparent.

One small moment we savored was the annihilation of a driver we used to run against at another track. Not a bad guy, but one that never had a good thing to say and was always ready with an excuse. In short, he got his doors blow off. Petty? Perhaps. But victories are tough to come by and you take 'em where you can.

Driver introductions and parade laps in the officials trucks were a nice touch added by track management.

All in all, a satisfactory ending to a season that started out in brutal fashion.
